Check the Quality of Your Bumper: How to Repair Bumper Damage

Check the Quality of Your Bumper: How to Repair Bumper Damage

According to Ohio law, “any passenger automobile, multipurpose passenger vehicle, or truck registered in this state shall not be operated upon a street or highway unless such vehicle is fitted with bumpers as standard equipment by the manufacturer.” If your car bumper is damaged, you should consider having it repaired as soon as possible.

The car bumper protects the radiator, air filter, and all engine components in the hood and trunk. More than half of all vehicles on the road have some sort of visual flaw, which can range from minor dings in the body or bumper to more serious deep scratches and dents. Your car bumper has most likely received a few bruises from regular use. We provide the best auto body, dent removal, and paint repair for a damaged bumper in Western Ohio at Dealers Choice, Ohio.

The “real bumper” is the heavy metal that surrounds and protects your vehicle in the event of an accident. The bumper cover is what is commonly referred to as a bumper because it wraps around the heavy metal.

Some of these bumpers buckled and cracked. Fortunately, except in extreme cases, these two types of damage are usually repairable. It is costly to replace bumpers with faulty parts or to replace individual parts. Our Dealers’ Choice experts specialize in bumper repair and replacement in a variety of materials, including:

  • Chrome bumpers.
  • Plastic bumpers.
  • Fiberglass bumpers.

Steps to take in cracked and scratched bumper repair

There are a series of steps to be followed when doing repair work for scratches or a cracked bumper; they include:

First Step: Lift and fasten your car – Lift the car with a car jerk and secure it with a jerk stand to gain better access to the damaged area.

Second Step: Clean the surface – Cleaning the surface to be repaired makes it easier to inspect and prepare the damaged bumper for repair.

Third Step: Remove the excess plastic – An angle grinder or cutting wheel should be used to remove any extra light layer of fiberglass fibers or residual plastic. Using the angle grinder cutting wheel, straighten the hard edges wherever possible. Use the Dremel in conjunction with a burrowing tool to reach those hard-to-reach areas.

Fourth Step: Make the damaged surface smooth by sanding sandpaper (60 grit) to smoothen the surface and prepare it for repairs.

Fifth Step: Clear excess dust – Remove any dust from all of the components with a cloth, an air compressor, or both.

Sixth Step: Prepare the section—Apply a coat of grease and wax remover or paint prep. Also, prepare the components from the repair kit.

Seventh Step: Cut a few sheets of fiberglass 30mm-50mm bigger than the damaged section.

Eighth Step: Combine the resin and catalyst – Following the instructions included with the repaired product (bumper), combine the resin and catalyst. The color should change if everything is properly blended.

Ninth Step: Place the resin – Neatly apply it over the affected area using a paintbrush and ensure it’s wet.

Tenth Step: Coat the damaged area- Using fiberglass sheets, ensure sufficient resin while you thoroughly coat the damaged area. Leave for 10 minutes to dry.

Eleventh Step: Resin the front side – To the front section, apply resin and allow 30 minutes to dry.

Twelfth Step: Do sanding to the front side of the repaired area – use 80 grit to achieve a smooth, even surface.

Thirteenth Step: Polish the area – Use grease and wax remover or paint prep.

Fourteenth Step: Prepare and mix the body filler – Using a putty knife or Bondo spreader, apply several layers of body filler and mold the layers to mimic the shape and contour of the original bumper.

Fifteenth Step: Sand the surface – Use 180 grit to smoothen the section.

Sixteenth Step: Clean the area.

Seventeenth Step: Prepare the area for primer application by covering it with masking tape or newspaper.

Eighteenth Step: Finally, apply a few layers of primer.

Plastic Bumpers Repair

Unlike older sheet metal bumpers, modern bumpers conceal the metal bumper beneath a semi-flexible plastic fascia. You will need the following items to repair a plastic bumper:

  • Sponge.
  • Set of wrenches.
  • WD-40 multi-use.
  • Microfiber cloth.
  • Heat gun.
  • Abrasive paste.
  • Fine sandpaper.
  • WD-40 Universal cleaner.
  • Filler for plastics.
  • Polishing pad.
  • WD-40 Fast Release Penetrant.
  • Filler for plastics.

For plastic repair after step 13:

Fourteenth Step: Mix all contents of the repair kit; Follow the provided instructions.

Fifteenth Step: Tape together the cracked surfaces to stabilize the repair section.

Sixteenth Step: Apply the bummer repair product – Apply the repair material from the rear at an angle using a putty knife to ensure it is forced into the crack out of the front.

Seventeenth Step: Remove the tape.

Eighteenth Step: Sand the section using 80-grit sandpaper.

Nineteenth Step: Clean and cover the necessary parts.

Twentieth Step: Apply the primer.

Is My Bumper Repaired Properly?

To fully ascertain the quality of your bumper repair, you need to check the following:

  • Inspect the damaged panel.
  • Inspect other surrounding panels and inside the car.
  • Check for any; thick, cracked, or peeling paint.
  • Make sure the even paint job blends with precision.

If all the above check out, then the bumper repair should be to satisfactory levels.
